Recalling Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan in the Philippines

Few days ago I was just staring in our backyard and watching all the flowers swaying by the air; I feel great inside watching it , it gives me inner joy in my heart and I just whisper in myself , it`s really May now.

Way back in the Philippines during  month of May.  Our place were busy  inviting teen-agers to join in the "Flores de Mayo".  Flores de Mayo is a Catholic festival held in different places in the philippines in the month of May. It lasts for a month and the primary aim of this festival is to honor Virgin Mary as the mother of Jesus.

Why it is held during month of May? in the Philippines May is the month where flowers blooms  after thorough rains during rainy seasons , during this months flowers came out with different colors and scents. In most of the towns they offer flowers in the altars as sign of their love to Virgin Mary, signs of thanksgiving for all the blessings they received and usually famailies are  praying rosaries before the sunset.

May is also the month where Santa Cruzan held. Historically, Santacruzan  was a nine day preparation through prayers (novena)commemorating St. Helena`s story of finding the cross. Of what I remembered during my Religious Education subject, it was 300 years after the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross she starts finding the cross. The celebration of Santacruzan usually lined with different titles of saints represented by different chosen people during the feasts. They wore colorful dresses according to the saints they`re portraying ; in preparation with this feasts they do the novena every afternoon in honor of the Cross, until they completed the nine days. During the culmination of the nine days they had  a procession in different places of the towns or barangay in the community.
